The Nara period poet Yamabe no Akihito (700-736) is revered for his poems in the Manyoshu collection of poetry. He seems to have traveled with Emperor Shomu in Yoshino and Ki. He even traveled to Eastern Japan and his poem about Mt. Fuji is one of the earliest descriptions of the peak.
